Cultural Capital

What is Cultural Capital?

Cultural capital is the essential knowledge, skills and experiences that children need to prepare them for future success.  All children who come to Cherry Trees already have a wealth of life experience which has equipped them with important skills to make sense of the world, interact with others in society and learn about their environment, and each child's experience will be very different.

Our job at Cherry Trees is to build on these experiences and create lots of new ones too.  We celebrate children's diversity and uniqueness, and them to build on what they know from their own backgrounds and life experiences,  providing many opportunities for them to talk about themselves and their friends and family.  We help them to  learn  more about the world in the context of their own personal experience.

Throughout the year we learn about different festivals and traditions that are practised  by our children and their families. Here are some of the things we have looked at.

Father's Day  We made pictures for our relatives and talked about those who are special to us

St George's Day  We made flags and talked about George and the Dragon

Diwali      We made sparkly pictures and patterns.  We respect each other's cultures

Pictures of family  We made pictures of ourselves and our families and talked about our similarities and differences

Different types of family  We recognise that there are many types of family structure and we talk about who belongs in our family and who we live with and visit

Everyday routines  We use experiences of our home lives in role play, at the same time as learning valuable skills such as washing up and cutting fruit
